Preparing for a scaring as Halloween approaches
PREPARATIONS are underway for Halloween at a communal garden in Brinnington.
Green Thumbs, based at Northumberland Road, offers plots for residents to grow their own produce.
It was set up as part of the Brinnington Big Local, a scheme funded by the National Lottery.
And the items grown at the project include pumpkins, which are ripening up nicely ahead of this year’s Halloween.
Chris Stonier and Tony Seppman, who are part of Brinnington Big Local took the time to show visiting MP Ann Coffey round the project.
She said: “The community gardens have come on so much in just one season, and it was a pleasure to be shown around. It’s a real haven of green tranquillity.
“I’m so impressed by the range of produce being grown and the skills the gardeners are learning.”
Green Thumbs has been going for 12 months and has attracted plenty of Brinnington residents, who have learned new skills.
Other things grown there include flowers, herbs and vegetables.
The Brinnington Big Local is a 10-year programme aiming to make the area a safer, nicer and friendlier place to live.
Other areas are also making preparations for the fright-filled day.
There will be a Halloween dinner at Offerton Community Centre, Mallowdale Road, on tomorrow from midday to 2pm.
For £5 guests can have a three-course meal that will include what organisers describe as a ‘spooky trifle’.
And there will be a Halloween fun day at Bridgehall Community Centre, on Siddington Avenue, on Friday from 2pm to 4pm.
There will be lantern making, a fancy dress competition with prizes, crafts, biscuit decorating and face painting.
Trick or treat bags will also be handed out to guests.
