Phil cherishes round to remember

MELLOR and Townscliff­e golfer Phil Welsh had an amazing round in a club Saturday Stableford posting a remarkable 67-8-59 card for a stunning 47 points.

This included a hole-in-one on the par three 11th hole which was his first ace in 35 years of playing golf.

Phil finished seven shots clear of the field and was quick to praise the club’s Greens team for the superb condition of the course – particular­ly the greens. Phil admitted that although he hits the ball a long way he can be wayward at times but it certainly all came together in a round to remember which drops his handicap down to six.

There was some hot scoring in a singles Stableford at Bramall Park led in by Matthew Wheatley with a fabulous 44 points seeing him home from Anselm Agwunobi 41 and Peter Corrigan 40.

Park ladies played a medal in their Autumn Meeting and in the divisions the tops cores came from Janet Cowan 69 and Judy Read 70, Jo Coutts 73 from Laura Foster and Elise Matthews, both 77, and Maggie Briggs 76 from Maria Bailey 78.

A Junior Academy Stableford at Bramhall was won by Daniel Hayes with 34 points, seven more than Josh Jennings.

A singles Stableford for Bramhall’s men was led in by Andy Robins with 39 points, one more than Chris Bowden and Mike Lamb.

Bramhall ladies were in medal mode and leading in the four divisions were Carol Coulson 73, Claire Eyre 74, Judy Stocker 74 and Alison Jobes 83.

A Wednesday medal at Reddish Vale saw Jason Leech top of division one with 71 from Lee Norcross, John Seaton and Stuart Wilde. All 73.

It was close in a singles Stableford at Vale with a cpo on 36 points going in favour of the peerless John Seaton from Simon Mulvey and John Northrop.

Anne Gosling was able to stock up her Xmas larder by winning a Turkey Shoot for Vale’s ladies after a cpo on 35 points with Jeanette Kinder.

A Midweek Stableford at Marple was won in style by Ashok Popat with 41 points from Steven Simpson 38 and Don Large 35.

The October Stableford at Marple had Shaun McDonnell on top of division one with 40 points, one more than Mark Walton.

Medal action for Marple’s ladies had Pauline Davies winning a cpo on 74 from Edna Wright.

The Houldswort­h Classic went right to the wire before Steve Bardsley won a cpo on 71 from Danny McCoy with Philip Armstrong two shots off the pace.

A singles Stableford for Houldswort­h ladies was won by Jackie Beverley after a cpo on 27 points with Doreen Hall with Pam Wiseley next with 24.

A junior Stableford at Hazel Grove was won with a terrific haul of 45 points from Joel Mathieson, eight more than Liam Mann.

The first Winter Stableford at Grove needed a cpo on 41 points to see Bryan Sinclair across the line from Gareth Hunt, one more than Adrian Waring.

Grove’s ladies were also in Stableford mode with Christine Jones winning at a canter with 38 points.
