MORE than £5,000worth of bikes were stolen during a spate of burglaries in a Stockport suburb.

Thieves broke in to a garage on Gladstone Grove, Heaton Moor, some time between Friday at 9am and Saturday at 10.30am.

They made off with three bikes - a red and black Focus Izalco worth £2,500, a turquoise and black £1,700 Cannondale Synapse, and a black Cannondale Cyclocross worth £900.

Police have appealed for witnesses to the breakin, which saw a glass pane removed from the garage window.

And residents have been warned to stay security-minded after several other burglaries in the area.

Inspector Stephen Gilbertson, from Stockport police, said: “We will be looking on places such as eBay.

“People will try and mask the bikes’ identity. They can also take them apart and sell them bit by bit.

“These bikes were out of sight and the owners did everything they could to keep them safe but we would warn others to take precautions.

“Especially as Christmas approaches thieves will know there may be presents to steal at homes.

“So keep anything valu- able out of view and ensure windows and doors are locked and shut. Timers for lights are also a good idea for when you are out. Anyone wanting security advice can contact us and we will help.”

Burglars also broke into a home on New Beech Road, Heaton Mersey, between 11pm on Saturday and 3pm on Sunday.

They got in through an unlocked back door and stole a laptop worth £1,000 and the keys to a £2,000 Saab 93 before driving off in it.

On Friday between 8am and 5pm thieves forced open a back door on Holcombe Walk, Heaton Chapel, to steal a bracelet, lap top, Nintendo DS and tablet worth a combined £500. And crooks hurled a brick through a patio window to get into a home on Harmsworth Drive, Heaton Moor.

Once inside they stole computer equipment worth £1,500. The incident happened on November 15 shortly before 6pm.

Police have launched Operation Goblet, an antiburglary initiative with increased patrols to coincide with the nights getting darker earlier.
