COUNCIL NEEDS TO WAKE UP

-

FURTHER to Mr Ankers’ letter in last week’s paper about the amount of street lighting not working in the Stockport area, this is no surprise to me as I used to live in Stockport and used to find lights not working in several parts of the borough and they would not be fixed unless reported by a member of the public.

Now not everyone has the time or ability to do this and it should be down to the council or Solutions SK to do regular checks.

Solutions SK are the contractors who carry out all the street lighting issues on behalf of Stockport MBC. Just like the car parks have now been handed over to NCP. What section will the council give away to contractors next?

Across the boundary in Cheshire East it is totally different! The council itself runs the street lighting department and recently the whole of Poynton has had new street lights which are the new LED ones and any damaged metal posts and all concrete posts have been replaced and all lights checked to ensure they are working. And this is on every side road too

Macclesfield have had a similar job done too and parts of Wilmslow and Handforth.

Maybe Stockport needs to consider a similar plan and go for LED lighting which would save them money in the long run and be able to replace all the concrete posts in the borough. Some concrete posts have even had a new metal fitting at the top with the same light fitting put back on which look silly and make that particular light stand out to all the rest in the street.

Even Manchester City Council had an entire light change over the last five years with all concrete posts replaced and the orange glow lights scrapped and replaced with LED.

Wake up Stockport MBC and don’t be leaving us in the dark now that winter is approaching! Joseph Connor Poynton
