-

A MAN has been charged in relation to a car crash in Cheadle that left another man fighting for his life in hospital.

The 21-year-old victim, named locally as Declan Blackburne, sustained a serious head injury and a number of internal injuries in the smash on Councillor Lane on Thursday last week.

It is understood that he remains in a critical condition.

Mark Darren McCormack, 30, of no fixed abode, has been charged with failing to stop and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

He has been remanded in custody to appear at Minshull Street Crown Court on January 3.

The crash happened in the early hours of Thursday morning, when a police patrol in Cheadle spotted a black Honda Civic on Birdhall Lane.

The Honda ended up ploughing into a tree on Councillor Lane, and it is understood it also collided with a telegraph pole, a street light and phone boxes.

Well wishes have been pouring in for Mr Blackburne on social media.

Brandon Jones wrote on Facebook: “Hope Declan Blackburne pulls through! Stay strong pal!”

Eddie Eze Pickersgill said: “Can’t believe what I’m seeing, come on Declan Blackburne you can pull through this bro. Thinking of you .... ”

Warren Leah added: “You’re strong enough to get through Declan Blackburne fingers crossed mate. X.”

Joshua JG posted: “Declan Blackburne What news I’ve just heard hope you pull through mate love you xx.”

A large part of Councillor Lane was shut off for most of the morning while police and specialist accident investigation teams examined the scene.

Many residents told how they were woken by the sound of the crash, saying how they heard the screeching of tyres then a loud bang.

PC Helen Hallworth of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “We are now appealing for the public’s help to assist in our investigation. We are particularly interested to hear from anyone that may have witnessed the collision or seen the vehicle previously.”
