Christmas honours for ‘heroes’
THE very best of the Reddish community will be celebrated at the first awards ceremony of its kind.
Freshfire Church is hosting its first ever Christmas Extravaganza celebration, during which it will honour members of the community for the contribution they make to the area.
Five winners have been chosen, after the church asked residents to nominate their unsung heroes.
Shirley Tootell, the headteacher of St Elisabeth’s Primary School, will be given the teacher award, Dr Ian Dickie, of the Reddish Family Practice, will receive the doctor award, Austin Moor will be named best neighbour, Renaissance Hairdressing will win the business award, while 16-year-old Holly McCormack will be crowned community champion of the year.
All the proceeds made on the night, which will feature a variety of music, dance and theatre performances, will be ploughed into the Re:Dish charity, which runs a variety of community projects, including a food bank.
Community pastor Adam Sanders said: “We wanted to do something to honour the people who go the extra mile in everything they do.
“Shirley treats the children as her own, it’s not just a job to her. Dr Dickie is very good with people and is always so friendly and thorough.
“Austin drove a neighbour and her daughter to hospital in an emergency, and even gave them money for a taxi home. He’s always looking out for people.
“Renaissance are always doing something for charity and Holly volunteers with Re:Dish at the foodbank.”
The event is open to the public at 7pm on Friday, December 16 at Reddish Vale High School. Tickets are £3 each, for more information call 442 9023.
