Scholarship will help support talented young engineer David
A HEATON Moor student has been awarded a prestigious scholarship.
David Swarbrick, 18, a former school captain at The Manchester Grammar School is one of an elite set of engineering students who has been awarded a Diamond Jubilee Scholarship by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).
David was school captain last year and having achieved an exceptional four A*s in his A-levels over the summer, was awarded a place at Churchill College, Cambridge.
The talented engineer is now one of just 100 students to have been awarded the scholarship, which is given to students who achieved at least three As at A-level and have accepted a place on an IET accredited engineering or technology degree this autumn.
David will now receive at least £1,000 per year to help towards his studies.
The scholarships are named in honour of the IET’s patron, HM The Queen, and aim to address the science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) skills shortage in the UK.
The main aim of the initiative is to encourage talented students like David to study IET accredited courses, which will put them on a path that is not only challenging and rewarding, but is also vital to future prosperity.
David said: “I’m incredibly grateful and honoured to have been awarded the scholarship. The mentoring and support it will provide will be invaluable in my professional development as an engineer.
“During my degree I’m looking forward to working with the IET to encourage more students towards engineering, and after graduating I hope to work in the industry.”
