- GOLF GEOFF GARNETT

BRAMHALL Golf Club’s international star Bronte Law recently received the ANNIKA Award Presented by 3M as the country’s most outstanding female golfer.

Bronte was recognized after enjoying a banner 2015-16 season.

In 11 stroke-play starts, Bronte had three wins and four other top-four finishes. She also ended the season top of the Golfweek/Sagarin Women’s Amateur rankings.

Bronte said “It’s the biggest award I’ve ever won; being regarded by my peers and the coaches as the best player for this year is something I’ve worked really hard for.

“It’s such an honour to win an award in Annika Sorenstam’s’s name, somebody who has been my role model since I started playing golf.

“Bronte played beautifully all season and is an exceptionally deserving winner of the 2016 ANNIKA Award,” added Annika.

Bronte never forgets her roots, and the support of her family, Richard Green and all at Bramhall Golf Club where she always returns to when back in home territory.

High Legh Park provided another great day a full and talented Manchester Alliance field with a fine course backed by superb weather and some magnificent Autumn colours.

There was plenty of hot action on the course with a terrific battle for the top individual pro prize being won by Chorley assistant pro Andy Palmer with 42 points from Birchwood’s Phil Archer 41 and Adam Hodkinson (Chorlton) and Andrew Terry (Whitefield), both 39.

Former European Tour star Phil Archer found a great partner in Roy Ainscough of Wilmslow Golf Club, the RAA putters chief, as they posted a huge 47 points.

The highlight was a very rare albatross from Phil on the 480-yard par five fifth hole as his tee shot was followed by an arrowstraight rescue wood second flying into the hole for a bird only achieved very rarely in Alliance competitions.

It helped to take them three shots clear of Andy Palmer and Keith Ashton (Chorley) and Graham Cox (Lymm) and Anton Johnson (Warrington) with pro prizes also going to Rob Batchelor (Stand) and Liam Burgess (Bramall Park) also on 44 points.

The top assistant pro not in the main prizes was Olly Smith (Ashtonon-Mersey) with 37 points.

Olly was delighted to drive to High Legh in his new car sponsored by Jon Davies of Urmston Service Station.
