Target double

COUNTY manager Jim Gannon has set his side the target of still being in the play-off hunt AND the FA Trophy by the end of the year.

The Hatters picked up a 1-0 win over Gloucester on Saturday to move up the table, while they are set to back in FA Trophy action against either Darlington or Marine this weekend, with those clubs facing each other as the Express went to print on Tuesday.

Gannon is expecting a win there, along with more league wins in the coming weeks in order to meet the demands that he has laid out for his side.

“I’ve set the lads a challenge to be in and around the play-offs and still be in the FA Trophy by the turn of the year, so if we can do that then it will be a fantastic first half to the season,” he said.

“In our last five games we have only picked up five points which isn’t great, so it was important that we got the win against Gloucester on Saturday.

“Hopefully we can get a win in our next game to get the points ratio up, as we are playing a bit of catch up at the moment.

“If we keep getting the points we need and keep a solid squad going forward then we will get better as the season goes on because we will keep gathering momentum.”

Gannon was pleased with the win against Gloucester on Saturday, but believes there is still plenty of room for improvement.

“I’ve been more pleased with some of our performances in previous games where we’ve not won,” he said. “I’m obviously pleased with the result and the effort against Gloucester, but we still need to improve and need to be better when we play the bigger sides.”
