Moving Christmas service for hospice

HUNDREDS of people headed to Manchester Cathedral to make a very special Christmas dedication to their loved ones.

Supporters of St Ann’s Hospice joined dignitaries from across Greater Manchester for a series of services as part of the charity’s annual Light up a Life appeal.

Thousands of people have taken part in the appeal over the last 20 years by taking the opportunity to dedicate a light on one of the hospice’s Christmas trees across the local area in honour of their loved one, whilst making a donation to the charity.

Lights were lit at the cathedral during a service led by the Bishop of Manchester, as members of the congregation celebrated the lives of those they can’t be with this Christmas.

Eamonn O’Neal, chief executive of St Ann’s, said: “It was extremely moving to be a part of these services and to reflect and honour the lives of so many local people.

“It’s overwhelming to see so many lights shining on the Christmas tree and everyone in the cathedral holding up their lighted candles in memory of someone very special to them.

“A huge thank you to everyone who has taken part in the appeal and has chosen to make a donation to support our patients.

“Every penny really does make a difference to their lives, and as a charity we simply couldn’t carry on without the kind support of local people.”

The charity, which operates from three sites in Little Hulton, Heald Green and the Neil Cliffe Centre in Wythenshawe Hospital, looks after thousands of patients every year with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses – managing their symptoms, providing support, caring for people at the hospice or at home, and providing end of life care.
