AN ACTRESS from Stockport celebrated with a right Royal knees up after winning a Golden Globe for her portrayal of the Queen.

Claire Foy, 32, was named Best Actress in a TV Drama at the glitzy Hollywood ceremony for her role as Queen Elizabeth II in Netflix drama The Crown.

She was born in Stockport and first got a taste for performance while learning to ballet dance in the borough.

It was a world away from last night’s Golden Globes, which are seen as second only to the Oscars in prestige and are often a pointer as to who will win there.

Claire suffered for her art during the making of the The Crown as she broke her elbow at a wedding and had to have fluid drained off it to fit in her costume and keep on filming.

Upon receiving the award she said: “I am having an out of body experience, thank you very, very much I am so shocked, thank you Hollywood.

“When you play a real life person it is tricky and you rely very much on the people around you so I am going to dedicate this to all those people around me. There are so many of you.”

The Crown, which was also awarded best drama, tells the story of the Queen’s first 10 years on the throne as she has to adjust to life as a monarch.

Claire, who admits to being ‘an attention seeker who put on shows for the family’ was the youngest of three children.

She moved to Buckinghamshire aged eight following the divorce of her parents, sales director David and Caroline, a pharmaceutical worker.

Claire switched her interest from dancing to acting as a teenager after developing juvenile arthritis.

At the ceremony she said: “I really wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for some extraordinary women so I am going to thank them.

“One of them is Queen Elizabeth II, she has been at the centre of the world for 63 years and I think the world could do with a few more women at the centre of it.

“Finally another extraordinary woman in the making is my girl. I love you, you are the future and you are just brilliant.”

Among those to offer congratulations were the team at Stockport Plaza.

They tweeted: “Congratulations and well done to Stockport-born star Claire Foy for her Golden Globe Award for her portrayal of The Queen in The Crown.”
