‘Inadequate’ home in special measures

-

A CARE home has been placed into special measures after inspectors heard residents were left without duvets overnight and wore each other’s clothes.

Inspectors from the Care Quality Commission rated Bowerfield House, a privately-owned care home run by Maria Mallaband Care Group Ltd in Disley, Stockport, ‘inadequate’ after visiting at the beginning of December. Issues highlighted include a resident being left without a duvet on their bed overnight while a relative said they would find their family member wearing other people’s clothes.

The visit followed on from a previous inspection in October 2016, which identified breaches of three regulations under the Health and Social Care Act.

In December inspectors identified seven breaches of the Act, in areas including person-centred care, dignity and respect; need for consent and meeting nutritional and hydration needs.

The home was given ratings of inadequate for the safety and responsiveness of the service, as well as its leadership, and ratings of ‘requires improvement’ for the effectiveness of the service and how caring it is. The issues identified include medicines not being kept safely, not enough staff providing direct care and support to residents, care plans not being regularly reviewed and poor record keeping. The home will be kept under review and will be inspected again within six months.

A spokesman for Maria Mallaband Care Group Ltd said: “Senior managers are supporting staff at Bowerfield House in order to ensure that the necessary improvements are made and sustained. We are confident that we have made the necessary improvements.”
