TEENAGERS who have led a four-year campaign to get a skatepark have now seen the project take off.

The new area has been opened in Alexandra Park, Edgeley and can be used by skateboarders, BMXers, scooter riders and inline skaters.

Youngsters first asked for a free, accessible skatepark back in 2013 having had to travel long distances to find somewhere to take part in the activity.

And, after winning support from councillors and other bodies, they secured £140,000 funding.

The teens even formed their own group - Alexandra Skatepark Association - that has its own logo and constitution.

One of the members, Owen Peters, is now 18 but was just 14 when he began the campaign.

He said: “It has taken an unbelievable amount of time and hard work to get to where we are.

“When we first started this we never expected to get the amount of support and drive that we did.

“I would personally like to thank everyone for their support. The anticipation from the community has been truly overwhelming.

“I would also like to thank all the organisations that got us to the place we are today.

“Hopefully, I’ll see you all at the skatepark.”

Money has come from Stockport Council, who gave £50,000, Life Leisure (£50,000), a £37,000 grant from Veolia Environmental Trust and £5,000 from Stockport Homes.

The youngsters have also been out promoting the idea to get community support.

They held an open day at the park, on Edgeley Road, with temporary skate equipment to judge the level of interest.

Councillors Sheila Bailey, Philip Harding and Richard Coaton have helped the teenagers’ campaign.

Coun Bailey said: “This project is a credit to everyone involved. It has taken several years to complete but persistence and commitment have been rewarded.

“I am sure the facility will be a great asset to the local community.”

Malcolm McPhail, from Life Leisure, added: “We are delighted that the project has come to fruition and are very proud to have played a part in bringing it to life.

“Young people from the local community have shown so much passion and commitment throughout the entire process, so seeing their vision realised is hugely important.”
