Shakespeare, Cilla and lashings of folk

- THE PLAZA

CILLA and the Shades Of The 60s, a hugely entertaining stage show for families and pop music fans of all ages, will be live on stage at The Plaza in the heart of Stockport on Friday, March 17, at 7.30pm.

Cilla and the Shades of the 60s is a fabulous musical tribute to the songs of Cilla Black and the many artists and songwriters who changed the world of popular entertainment during the 1960s.

The show is fronted by the effervescent Liverpudlian singer/ actress Victoria Jones who, along with the Shades Trio, will take audiences on a musical journey through Cilla’s life and some of the biggest chart hits of the era.

Classic hit songs such as Alfie, Anyone Who Had A Heart, Step Inside Love and many more will also celebrate the great song-writing partnerships of the time including Lennon/ McCartney, Bacharach/ David, Lamont/Dozier/ Holland, and Greenaway/Cook.

Victoria Jones will take the audience down memory lane reliving some of the most popular aspects of Cilla’s stellar career such as Blind Date – which ran for a record breaking 18 years – and her own hit TV show.

Tickets for Cilla and the Shades Of The 60s at The Plaza on Friday, March 17, at 7.30pm can be purchased from our Box Office on Mersey Square in central Stockport, by calling our Booking Line on 0161 477 7779 or by visiting The Plaza website on www. stockportplaza.co.uk. Ted Doan

NK THEATRE ARTS

‘KNOCK knock! Who’s there?’

Nope it’s not the start of a joke, it’s something we use in everyday language thanks to the genius of William Shakespeare.

People may not realise just how many Shakespearian phrases we use in our daily lives, but that phrase is one of them. There are plenty more: ‘For goodness sake’, ‘Mum’s the Word,’ ‘All’s Well That Ends Well’ and if you’ve not had had a good night’s sleep you will tell your friends you have ‘not slept one wink!’ another phrase invented by The Bard.

We are delighted to be performing, ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’: Shakespeare’s most popular comedy, set in an enchanted forest with fairies, sparring lovers and a group of amateur actors who are putting on a play at The Forum Theatre from May 24-26.

On a midsummer’s night, four young lovers find themselves wrapped in the dream-like arms of an enchanted forest where sprites lurk and fairies rule. While a feuding Fairy King and Queen are at war, their paths are crossed by Bottom, Quince and their friends presenting a play within a play.

Chief mischief-maker Puck is on hand to ensure that the course of true love is anything but smooth, and games of fantasy, love and dreams ensue in Shakespeare’s most beguiling comedy.

Tickets for the performance can be booked via our ticket line 0333 666 3366 or by visiting www. theforumtheatre.co.uk

SEVEN MILES OUT

OVER the past four years we have established a wonderful community of people who support all the cultural events we have organised in Stockport Old Town and Seven Miles Out.

Our community recognise the potential of this unique and historic part of Stockport town centre as a place to socialise, shop and enjoy a variety of eclectic entertainment.

We all want to see it become more popular by harnessing the special power of Foodie Friday that attracts so many visitors from all over the North West on the last Friday of the month by giving more great reasons for people to come on a daily basis. We hope that our third annual Stockport Old Town Folk Festival sponsored by Robinsons Brewery will continue to attract new visitors to the Old Town when it takes place over two weekends this year from Friday, April 21, to Sunday, April 30. The Festival includes Folk Foodie Friday and two Sunday events - a St. George’s Day Celebration and a Day of Dance with plenty of free family entertainment. We will also have lots of brilliant music events taking place in Seven Miles Out over the Festival so we hope you’ll be able to join us.

Many of our events in Seven Miles Out are organised and run by members of our community like Sound and Vision this Saturday evening which is always a great night in the company of wonderful people.

Sound and Vision is a retro vinyl night, the creation of Vicki Collard with the help of her husband Ric and son James who DJs as ‘The Vinyl Frontier.’ We are very grateful for the support of Team Collard in making Sound and Vision one of our most successful nights and bringing people back month after month for the heady mix of classic dance tracks from past decades and an intimate club atmosphere.

Sound and Vision has been described as an ‘adult youth club’ and is a great opportunity for people to meet friends and let their hair down for a bop under the disco ball. It’s free entry and doors open from 7.30pm. If you haven’t joined us yet, arrive early as the hours just melt away with such great music and everything stops at midnight.
