Springing into life on the greens

COMPETITIO­N draws are starting to be announced as the season begins to flicker into life.

The Woodley Sports Spring Classic at Lambeth Grove takes place over four qualifying Sundays commencing on March 26th.

The opening day, which starts at 10am, features G I Wilson, Callum Wraight, John Davies and Dean Ferris.

Also taking place on Sunday March 26th 2017 is the Love Lane super 32 in aid of cancer research UK.

The Jack/John Bramley Memorial also features a top class line up including Dave Jackson, Neil Jenkinson, Paul Dooley, John Hignett Jnr, and Ben Gloag.

Love Lane ends officially next Sunday (19th) with the fixed pairs title decider going down to the wire.

Local bowlers had a good weekend playing in events outside of the town.

On Sunday young Ben Mills lifted the juniors North Lancs and Fylde merit at Fox Lane Bowling Club.

Meanwhile, Jamie Bramley reached the semi-finals of the Ossett Flying Horse sweep in Yorkshire losing 18-21 to eventual winner Chris Brown.

Over at Droylsden on Sunday, Mark Sutton packed 30 pairs onto two greens for his pairs.

Sutton himself won the sweep with wife Gill defeating Steve Ellis and Paul Dooley 21-18 in the final.

Chris Barlow and Gary Hoof also played well on the day reaching the semi final stage before losing to the winners.

To complete a good weekend all round for the locals, Poynton’s Tommy Johnstone qualified at West Brom in the midlands.

The Alderley four-man team event got underway at The Union Club last week.

On Tuesday a strong Cheshire Cheese team from Northwich qualified for the finals.

Wednesday saw Congleton Park B progress to the last eight on Saturday April 1st.

The Thursday qualifiers saw Mike Bacon’s Bulldogs romp into the finals with all four winners in the qualifying game.

It’s not long now until the S and D Bowling league starts with some cracking fixtures on the opening night.

The first games take place on the 4th April with champions Houldswort­h WMC facing Nursery BC in a local derby.

Title contenders Poynton Sports face a trip to newly promoted Woodley Sports.
