A statement said: “James was the life and soul of the party who was liked by all he met. He loved his social life and had a good circle of friends and he would do anything for anybody.
“He was very athletic, playing football for a local team, Richmond Rovers and enjoyed going to the gym.
“He was a lifelong fan of Manchester City holding a season ticket along with his father and brother.
“He loved to travel and went to many parts of the world. This inspired him to join the Royal Navy which he had just been accepted into and was extremely excited at this new chapter in his life.
“James leaves behind his father, mother and brother who ask that their privacy is respected at this time.”
James worked at Waitrose in Poynton where branch manager Justin Pearce spoke of the staff’s shock.
Mr Pearce told the Express: ‘‘James, who was known as Hodge to everyone, was one of the friendliest people I’d ever met. He was a popular member of the team and will be missed by all who knew him. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.’’
