Classical music concert is to take place in church
MUSICA Nova’s next concert will take place on Saturday, March 25, at 7.30pm at All Saints’ Church, Cheadle Hulme, featuring a varied programme of music by Delius, Mascagni, Grieg and Mendelssohn.
The concert will open with Delius’ Two Small Pieces for Orchestra composed in 1911 - the celebrated On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring with its distinctive ‘cuckoo’ calls and Summer Night on the River, based on the river Loing which the blossoming garden of Delius’ villa faced.
The beautiful Intermezzo from Mascagni’s opera Cavalleria Rusticana is one of the most wellknown tunes in operatic history.
Within the opera, which was premiered in 1890, the Intermezzo symbolises the passage of time and foreshadows coming tragedy.
Grieg’s eclectic Holberg Suite is made up of five movements based on contrasting 18th century dance forms.
It was written in 1884 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Danish-Norwegian playwright Ludvig Holberg.
Mendelssohn took inspiration for his Symphony No 4, nicknamed the Italian, from the colour and atmosphere of Italy where he made sketches for the work and wrote to his sister Fanny: “It will be the jolliest piece I have ever done.”
The symphony’s first performance, in London in 1833, was a great success.
Musica Nova is a flexible chamber music orchestra that was formed in 2011 and established itself as a significant and respected ensemble.
The orchestra performs without a conductor, led and directed by Jem Bradley.
Tickets for the concert are £10, £8 for concessions, free for accompanied children under 16.
