IF you need a tin of interior wood and metal paint bigger than 750ml, you’ll struggle to find anything off the shelf other than pure brilliant white, but Farrow & Ball does lots of colours in 2.5ltr and 5ltr, giving you endless decorating possibilities.

Take Purbeck Stone Estate Eggshell (from £24 for 750ml, www.farrow-ball.com), a lovely taupe-grey that’s named after the colour of the stone found at Isle of Purbeck, Dorset. It goes on well and covers well and, although it’s not the cheapest paint, goes a long way, so you’ll need less than you think. Estate Eggshell has a 20 per cent sheen and is washable and wipeable. It’s also waterbased, so it’s low odour and dries quickly to speed up the job. It’s available in other finishes for wood and metal, and paints for other surfaces.
