Year of change at Heaton Moor

- GOLF GEOFF GARNETT

HEATON Moor Golf Club’s new Captain Mike Roberts is looking forward to a busy and successful year taking an active part in a process of change in the governance of the club as well as looking to recruit more playing members.

Mike, who will be looking to play a minimum of three times a week, has a very active sporting background having played semi-professional football for nearly 20 years in the Cheshire League and Vauxhall Conference for Winsford, Runcorn and Macclesfield Town and he supports Manchester United although he always looks out for Macclesfield Town’s results

His sporting enthusiasm is reflected in his choice of three people to play with him – they would be Sir Alex Ferguson, Jack Nicklaus and Mohammed Ali as ‘they are all great sportsmen who achieved a peak in their chosen sports and also a good mix of personalities that would lead to a most enjoyable round’.

Mike, who retired after working for 42 years in schools and colleges around Manchester had a lowest handicap of six, now 14 and among his other hobbies, apart from watching sport, are travelling and gardening.

Mike said: “Joining me in office will be former captain Ken Lappin who is also deeply involved in promoting and developing the club in a process of change. We are changing from a 15 member committee to a Management Board and moving towards Incorporation by becoming a limited company by Guarantee.

“The club is working closely with England Golf on its ‘Get into Golf’ campaign, the ladies ran a very successful taster day in 2016 followed by coaching sessions that resulted in a significant number of new members.

“The Taster Day is to be repeated on April 9 and is open to any men, ladies and juniors who would like to try the game free of charge and to find out more contact the club on 0161 432 2134.”
