THE annual Stockport Old Town Folk Festival returns to Stockport Market Place bigger than ever before this year.

The third annual festival sees two weekends of music, dance, comedy and street performance from Thursday, April 20, to Sunday, April 30.

Sponsored by Robinsons Brewery and supported by Stockport Council, this year’s Folk Festival includes a St George’s Day celebration on Sunday, April 23, a special folk-themed Foodie Friday on April 28 and a Day of International Folk Music and Dance on Sunday, April 30.

This year’s Festival features the performing talents of Fosbrooks Folk Education Trust, The Circus House, Stockport Ukulele Players, The Lally School of Irish Dancing, The Hayes Sisters, Chloe Jones, Lazlo Baby, Mama Goose and many more.

The St George’s Day Celebration starts with a parade from Market Place to Merseyway featuring Stockport and Manchester Morris Men, the giant creatures created by Stockport artist Sophie Tyrrell and St George and the Dragon.

Stockport Heritage Trust will provide free tours around the Old Town and the Stockport Dungeon will be open. Children from Vernon Park Primary School will be country dancing in the Market Square and performing their own St George and the Dragon play.

Organiser John Barratt from Seven Miles Out said: “We hope the community of Stockport will join us again to celebrate the fantastic heritage and folk tradition of our great town in the beautiful setting of the Market Place.”
