ACOUNTRY club boss has told how he had to unwrap the umbilical cord from around his newborn son’s neck after delivering him on the front seat of a car.

Darren Rogers, who runs Bredbury Hall country club in Stockport, was just 200 yards from his home when little Zachary decided it was time to make an arrival.

The 29-year-old had been on his way to hospital with fiance Yasmin Powell, 24, when their son’s head ‘popped out’ on the A34 road.

“She just said to me, I’ve either soiled myself or the head’s just come out.

“I put my hand across as I was driving and there he was!”

Darren said he had been cashing up at the Stockport club in the early hours of Mother’s Day when he got a call to say Yasmin’s waters had broken.

“It was about 4am, it had been a really busy night and I rushed home.

“We packed the car up, Yasmin wasn’t contracting but her waters had gone and we went off to North Staffordshire Hospital.

“She was monitored for a few hours but the contractions weren’t strong enough so we were sent home.”

The couple, who also have another son named Theodor, 22 months, returned to hospital later that day after being told Yasmin may need to be induced, but it was decided it still wasn’t time and they were sent home for a second time. At 3am on Monday morning, Yasmin awoke in excruciating pain.

Darren said: “It came out of nowhere. Her contractions had started and by 4am she was in absolute agony. Yasmin has quite a high pain threshold, but we knew it wasn’t going to be long now.

“We got back in the car and were literally 200 yards from home when the baby’s head popped out. I called for an ambulance on the car phone, they were asking me loads of questions and I was like ‘we’ve not got time for this the baby’s head is between her legs!’

“We were five miles from the hospital and I pulled over in a lay-by on the A34.

“I told her to grab the handle above the door and lift her self up, we didn’t even have time to take our seatbelts off - one push and he just fell out into my hands.

“The cord was wrapped around his neck, thankfully it wasn’t tight and we were able to lift it over his head. I put him on Yasmin’s chest and he started crying - it was a relief hearing his cry, but all the way to the hospital I was panicking, worrying if he was still breathing.”

Thankfully all was ok with little Zachary, who weighed 7lbs 11oz, and the family are now back at home in Stoke.

Darren added: “I can’t believe it happened, it’s like something out of a film.”
