Disley duo all set for top year

- GOLF GEOFF GARNETT

DISLEY Golf Club’s new captain and president are looking forward to a great year ahead at their superb clubhouse and course.

The new captain is Paul Evans, who has been a member of the club for 30 years and has a current handicap of 25 with his best being 19.

Paul, who lives in Disley, said: “Disley Golf Club has the most friendly atmosphere I have experienced than in any other golf club.

“It currently has a progressive board of directors who are striving to make the club accessible to all of the village of Disley.

”We want to find ways to bring in more members, especially ladies and juniors and further promote mixed golf.

“We are attracting more social members coming to social events and this is enhanced by having a top class chef.

“The views from the clubhouse are breathtaking and with the function room leading on to our large balcony it is a great place to hold a special celebration.

“I have personally held my 50th and 60th birthday parties and my son’s wedding there and I think that everyone should put it on their list of places to playthey would be very pleasantly surprised.

“My favourite course other than Disley is Port Patrick in Scotland and my favourite hole at Disley is the 16th when views from the tee concern hitting a ball out of bounds when you have a decent card and it also has a very tricky green.

“My other hobbies are walking and gardening and supporting Manchester City and my chosen Captain’s charity is the Bobby Moore Cancer Research and the Bobby Moore Unit at Stepping Hill Hospital – I am still here thanks to them- and my highlight in golf was playing my first game after bowel cancer operation – just felt good to be there!

“My chosen four ball partners would b Pope John Paul 1st, Barrack Obama and the Dalai Lama – just to be with three really nice people to see if they would be angry after missing a short putt.”

Giving Paul full support over the next year will be president Gareth Roberts who said: “I took up golf as a less demanding activity after playing other sports in the area, including cricket at High Lane and it was more difficult then to join and start playing at a golf club.

”At Disley now the game is far more accessible as we have a superb course overlooking the Peak District complemented by a renowned cuisine served at the club.

“I aim to concentrate on the developments of the club and course made in recent years and players and non-players will be welcome to enjoy golf and more functions at the club.”
