Gannon demands better

- RUSSELL EDGE

JIM Gannon admits he is frustrated his Stockport side have lacked the necessary quality to finish off sides this season and says he wants to see an improvement in their final five games.

Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Nuneaton Town extended County’s unbeaten streak to six games, and added to an impressive run which has seen the Hatters suffer defeat just once in 19 league games.

However, nine of these have seen County come away sharing the points, which has resulted in the club picking up 13 draws, the most in the league.

And boss Gannon says this inability to clinch victory comes down to a lack of quality running through his side.

“A couple of our players just didn’t show that quality that was needed to get that first goal, the second goal and see the game out,” said the 48-year-old, following the draw against Nuneaton.

“We created enough opportunities to win the game so I’m disappointed.

“That final ball, that final shot, that final cross in the right zones; just a little bit of edge of quality missing.”

One player who hasn’t lacked quality this season is County’s top scorer Danny Lloyd.

The forward was on target yet again on Saturday to score his 26th goal in all competitions, and was named the league player of the month for March after scoring four in four.

And his manager, who labels Lloyd as an “inside striker”, will be hoping that he continues his scoring exploits against a Gainsborough side who are without a win in ten.

“We expect a wounded animal to be coming at us desperate for points,” said Gannon.

“What we’ve got to do is expect a team that’s highly motivated and raise our game to match that. They’re all tough games, we can’t take anything for granted.”
