Children all set to GO in triathlon

- EMMA CURRY

BRITISH Triathlon is backing a GO TRI Seashell triathlon and duathlon for children with special needs.

The Seashell Trust is holding a triathlon for anyone aged eight and over who needs individual support and a duathlon for children aged eight to 14.

The distances to be run, cycled and swum at the charity’s Cheadle Hulme campus will be individually assessed for each participant.

The Seashell Trust runs a special school and college, as well as residential homes for children and young people with complex and severe learning disabilities and severe autism.

Maureen Wilkins, a teacher at the Seashell Trust’s Royal College Manchester, who has competed as a GB agegroup triathlete, is organising the event alongside Crazy Legs Events.

Maureen said: “This triathlon is unique as it has been adapted to suit every individual’s needs in a safe environment around the trust’s grounds. Specialist equipment is also available, such as hoists, adapted bicycles, tricycles, quad cycles and MOTOmeds.

“Because of the fantastic staff at the trust, everyone will be supported.

“We create visual symbols structured to each person’s needs to enable athletes to follow a sequence or routine for each activity.”

Oliver Heald, from British Triathlon North West, said: “We are really pleased to be supporting GO TRI Seashell.

“It is a fantastic opportunity for local children to take part in a GO TRI.

“We hope after this event we can work together further with the trust to provide more triathlon opportunities.”

GO TRI Seashell triathlon and duathlon will take place on Sunday, July 16, at the Seashell Trust, Stanley Road, Cheadle Hulme.

The cost for events is £11. both
