New duck race set to take wing
A NEW and improved duck race is coming to New Mills.
The organisers of New Mills Festival, the Parent and Teachers Associations (PTAs) from St George’s, St Mary’s, Newtown, New Mills, Hague Bar, Thornsett and Furness Vale primary schools and representatives from local nurseries have joined forces to organise this year’s race.
The event, which this year sees the addition of a race for local businesses and a school’s race, as well as the public competition, has cash prizes and trophies for the winning ducks.
It will be held on Saturday, June 25, from 12.30pm, with a 1pm start for the races.
The route will be along the River Goyt, starting near the viaduct and Goytside Farm. Access is by foot only.
New Mills Festival volunteer and duck race committee member, Rachel Walker, said: “With nearly 1,500 participants, last year’s event proved so popular that we have decided to expand a little bit.
“There will be entertainment from local children’s – and adults – hero The Big Bubble Man and lots of activities and refreshments.
“It’s great collaborating with such a big group of people - a lot of fun and fantastic that all the co-organisers can work together raising much-needed funds in the process.
“It’s what our community is all about.”
Tickets for the ducks are £2 each.
They can be purchased from participating schools and nurseries and from Priscilla’s Hallmark Cards, New Mills Post Office, New Mills Pets, Ryan’s DIY, Pretty Little things or from www. newmillsfestival.com.
Proceeds will go to local school PTAs, nurseries and New Mills Festival and there is a chance to win £50 for the first duck to finish, £30 for the second place finisher and £20 for third place.
