Young Harriers shine in relay race at Macc

- ATHLETICS PETER POWELL

STOCKPORT’S athletes have now attended the first of the Cheshire track and field league meetings at Macclesfield with more than seventy competitors from the Harriers taking part.

Following on from a recent and intensive relay coaching session, Team Stockport continued to shine with good wins in both the under 11s and under 15 girls events at 4 x 100 metres which will hold then in good stead for the next Youth development league match.

The junior section of the YDL league was satisfactorily dominated by team Stockport after the first meeting at Leigh Sports Centre recently and there are good hopes for another high end finish and athletes interested in being selected should make contact with team manager Carl Doodson as soon as possible.

Team Stockport will put up several teams in the 30th National Veterans Road Relays at Sutton Park in Birmingham on Saturday, with considerable input by team manager Alexis Dinsmor for the ladies. Thanks to her careful advance planning there will be representation in both the V35 and V45 sections.

For the men, club member Steve Shaughnessy has assembled a good team in the V55 category and, judging by past results, there is a fair chance of medal hopes from at least one of the selected teams.

Alexis Dinsmor continues with her planning skills and is arranging another “couch to 5 kms” eight-week course for complete running novices starting on Tuesday 6th June from Woodbank Community Centre (7pm) with further details available at www. stockportharriers.com

Stockport athletes continue to pop up in the most unexpected places around the world and this time in Borneo where local club runner Lyndsay Clarke tried her hand at the Borneo 10 kilometres event in conjunction with the country’s annual international marathon.

This, according to her coach Dave Turnbull, is “real warm weather training” and it doesn’t get much hotter than for a training and racing regime with a difference.

Back to the country lanes of Cheshire – but not as quiet as anticipated, with jets dropping out of the sky every couple of minutes or so at the Mobberley round the runway event which was won by Sale’s Nigel Martin in a good time of 25:14 with first Stockport Harrier being Simeon FarringtonNewman in 24th spot.

Further support came from Steve Shaughnessy in 36th with the added sweetness of first over 60s veteran age group.

For the ladies, Clara Jarvis stopped the clock to finish in 33:01 for 47th finish in a field of over 400 competitiors.

Stockport’s flying youth development team (lower age group) take to the track and field again for the second of four league competitions and this time at Longford Park, Stretford this coming Saturday with a start time of 11.30am.

They will be hoping to cement their top team position and one week later the upper age group will be competing with home advantage at Woodbank Park on Sunday, 28th May.
