Couples relive their big day

It was a double celebration for Mavis and John in 1964

A DOUBLY special date drew Market Place crowds .

Mavis Jones and John Mudge got married on Saturday, May 30, 1964.

The pair met whilst working at G.E.C. in Hazel Grove where Mavis worked as a clerk and John as a graduate engineer apprentice.

On their first date, the couple watched a film at the Plaza.

Mavis, who at the time of the wedding worked at the Belgrade Hotel as a receptionist while John was a PhD candidate in Engineering at Manchester University, remembers their big day fondly: “It was a lovely, sunny day and there were so many people in the Market Place watching our wedding. It felt very special indeed.”

It was also a special day as it marked the wedding anniversary of Mavis’ grandparents.

Mavis’ maternal grandmother, Annie Winfindale Bradshaw, got married at St Mary’s 60 years prior (also to a man called John - Mr John William Bradshaw, who was 29-years-old when he got married just like John Mudge).

After three years of marriage, the couple moved to California, USA, where they still live and in 2014, the couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.
