Party leader drops in at Hazel Grove
LIBERAL Democrat leader Tim Farron visited Stockport ahead of it being a vital general election battleground once again.
He was at Woodley Precinct on Friday to show his support for Lib Dem candidate Lisa Smart.
Mr Farron spoke about his party’s plans for health and social care and how they would be funded by putting an extra penny on income tax.
The Hazel Grove constituency is a fight between the Lib Dems and Conservative party, with the latter’s William Wragg currently the MP. He won the seat against Ms Smart at the last election - providing a gain for the Tories - but she is hoping to win it back for her party this time.
A similar situation exists in the Cheadle constituency, where Mary Robinson won the hard-fought seat for the Conservatives in 2015.
This year Mark Hunter is hoping to reclaim it on June 8.
Mr Farron is not the first leader to recognise Stockport’s importance as Prime Minister Theresa May visited the Plaza earlier this month.
And at the last election both Nick Clegg and the then PM David Cameron visited the borough.
