Green duo’s Hayfield win double

- JOHN RICHARDS

BOTH Hawk Green 1st and 2nd teams played Hayfield on Saturday and both teams amassed big totals.

At Hayfield the 1stXl won the toss and elected to bat, Josh Hampson and Craig Young opened for the Green and put on 140 for the first wicket, both batsmen were never troubled by the Hayfield attack and showed real class in their partnership which included deft touches and some real class square drives and pulls.

Hampson was first to fall for a brilliant 70, this brought Jordan Henderson to the wicket and he introduced himself by clubbing the first ball he received for 6 and this was to be the start of mayhem from the Green on the Hayfield attack.

Following the dismissal of Young for an excellent 89, enter skipper Josh Unsworth and if the Hayfield bowlers thought they would receive some form of sympathy from their former player this was soon dispelled as he helped himself to a very rapid 50 with some brilliant lofted drives and following the dismissal of Henderson for 36 Jason Downey was promoted with the intention of propelling the score near to 300 but such was the savageness of his hitting, 6 x 6s and 2 x 4s in 20 balls faced which included some huge strikes he closed on 47 n.o. and the Greens total on 323-6.

The Hayfield innings stuttered early on until the rejuvenated Jason Downey bowled Anthony Ebbrell which brought Gareth Davies to the crease and with George Wood he started to rebuild the innings until Ryan Stringer removed Wood with an excellent catch from Lewis Curtis.

Following the demise of Gareth Davies and Julian Burgess in quick succession Hayfield’s Aussie Liam WardArmstrong tried to compensate for the runs he had conceded in his bowling and proved to the Hayfield faithful that he really is a batting talent and in partnership with the inform Russ Evans gave the Hayfield total some respectability and the innings closed on 193 with Evans out for 52 and WardArmstrong was last out for 58.

With wickets shared, Downey 3, Unsworth 3, Richards 2, and 1 apiece for Stringer and Needham.

The 2nd Xl won the toss and elected to bat first at home and the innings was totally dominated by skipper Ben Cartledge who bludgeoned the Hayfield attack for a personal 204no and with Graham Hall also contributing 69 runs the innings closed on 357-8.

The Hayfield innings never really got started and once Steve Farmer was out for a hard fought 40 the innings closed on 165ao.

Twenty points for both teams.

On the Sunday the 1stXl entertained Buxworth in the Bissenden Cup and on winning the toss the Hawk Green skipper invited the visitors to take first knock, wickets fell steadily to 59-4 then the Buxworth batters completely lost the plot and in the face of some excellent bowling from Josh Unsworth and Jordan Henderson the innings closed, with no further addition on 59ao.

In reply, Hawk Green wasted no time in knocking off the 60 runs required for victory within eight overs with Craig Young yet again in great form closing on 31no.

The Greens 2nd Xl travelled to Compstall for the 2nd round of the Hawke Cup and in a very close game emerged victorious, the Green scored 124 and bowled Compstall out for 110 to complete a great weekend for the Green.

This weekend the 1st Xl entertain Woodley on the Saturday and travel to Broadbottom on the Sunday for the Regional Final of the National Village Cup.
