Honour for work with young people
A STOCKPORT volunteer has been recognised in The Queen’s Birthday Honours for efforts in support young people.
Margaret Brookes, a key lead volunteer in Girlguiding and the volunteer chief executive at Stockport Action for Voluntary Youth (SAVY), was awarded an MBE by the Queen.
The 63-year-old first became involved in Guiding when she volunteered for her local unit in Smithy Green. Since then, she has provided opportunities for girls and young women over the last 43 years.
Margaret’s highlights during her time with Girlguiding include attending many international trips and running events and activities for the girls. She is also a key member of the Trefoil Guild group in Stockport.
Margaret said: “Volunteering for Girlguiding is such a rewarding experience and it’s been wonderful to work with so many young women and girls over the years and see the difference Guiding makes to their lives.
“There are so many opportunities that I’ve been given, which I just wouldn’t have done without guiding.”
In her role as chief executive of SAVY, Margaret leads a charity which aims to engage vulnerable young people aged between eight and 25 years old from across the borough.
She has worked to ensure that the work of the charity continues, despite cuts to funding and a lack of resources.
