STOCKPORT County has been named the National League ‘Community Club of the Year.’

The club was presented with the award at a celebration evening earlier this month by Nick Perchard, the Premier League’s head of community.

Ian Lees, chairman of County’s Community Foundation, called the award ‘a fantastic accolade.’

He said: “It’s a tribute to all or staff, board and management team and confirms County are back up there as one of the leading clubs in the community across the country.

“Stockport County Community Foundation’s work within the community ranges from curriculum time teaching of young children in schools to engaging with senior citizens.

“This year we’ve made giant strides forward, developing our mental health football sessions, walking football, disability projects, girls’ sport, fundraising, healthy eating and even stadium tours.

“It’s a great privilege to play a key role in the Stockport County family.”

County chairman Richard Park added: “The work of our Community Foundation is hugely important in helping us to grow future generations of County fans, but it’s more important that we are able to put something back into the community we serve and this award is recognition that our team go above and beyond when delivering these initiatives.”

Plans are in place to continue expanding the club’s current projects as well as developing new ones, such as hosting out-of-term grassroots football tournaments, setting up sessions with housing associations and working in special schools.

Vice chairman Helen Foster-Grime said: “We are very proud to bring back this title to Stockport for our first-class fans.

“County have proven again you can harness the power of sport to make such a positive difference in people’s lives so, whatever your age or ability, come on down to Edgeley Park and be part of our future.”

The club has extended its thanks to its two main sponsors, Midshire and Parfetts, as well as all its staff and supporters.
