Greens pair toast weekend double

- JOHN RICHARDS

BOTH Hawk Green teams were successful on Saturday and Sunday in their respective league and cup games.

On Saturday, the 1st Xl hosted Old Glossop and on winning the toss Greens skipper Josh Unsworth elected to bat and opened the innings with himself and Josh Hampson.

Both batsmen looked quite comfortable against the opening attack of Littlewood and Walsh and took the score to 41 when Littlewood was replaced by slow bowler Allsop with immediate success.

He had Unsworth caught by Walsh for 22.

In form Peter Richards was next to the wicket and he and Hampson took the score to 83 before Allsop accounted for Hampson for 37, caught by keeper McGrail.

Youngster Jack Needham was next to the wicket and while he only scored six runs he and Richards added 40 to the total before being bowled by Acomb.

Newly promoted from the 2nd Xl, Ben Littler took full advantage of this opportunity and did not fail as he and Richards started to flay the Old Glossop bowling to all parts of the ground, adding 120 runs before Richards was out for a magnificent century, 108, leaving the Green on 234-4.

Littler continued to milk the bowling, closing on 68no as the Greens innings closed on a formidable total of 282-8 from their allotted overs, with Ellis Walsh the pick of their bowlers 4-54.

Johnny Wright and Jamie Sagar opened for Old Glossop against the opening attack of Jason Downey and Ryan Stringer and it was the latter who had immediate success when he had Sagar caught second ball by Hampson for a duck, 4-1.

This brought the experienced Andy King to the crease and it was obvious from the outset that he did not intend giving his wicket away cheaply and together with Wright took the score to 59 when Wright was removed caught w/k Littler bowled Mark Richards for 24, 59-2. Skipper Unsworth brought himself and Ryan Stringer back into the attack and once King fell for a patient 69 caught Downey bowled Stringer the remaining batsmen collapsed and the innings closed on 148 all out with Stringer on 3-21 and Unsworth 3-26.

The 2nd Xl had a similar result in their away game.

On Sunday the Greens 1st Xl were due to play Brook Walton in the last 32 of the National Knockout but heavy overnight rain deemed the ground unfit and the game was cancelled.

In the Bissenden Cup quarter final the Green travelled to Charlesworth and on winning the toss the home skipper elected to bat and the opening pair of Morely and Bennett found it hard to score against the opening attack of Downey and Stringer and in fact it was the sixth over before the first run was scored.

The introduction of Henderson into the attack paid immediate dividend as he removed both openers for 26 and 13 respectively, 40-2, then Mark Richards was introduced to the attack and the scoring once again dried up. Henderson continued to take wickets closing with 4-13 from his eight overs. Jack Needham, 2-14, and Lee Hallas, 3-6, mopped up the tail as the innings closed on 102.

Josh Hampson opened the innings with Paul Needham, promoted to give him some much needed time at the crease and neither looked in any trouble until Hampson was adjudged LBW for 12, 27-1.

Peter Richards seemed intent on finishing the game as quickly as possible and this caused his downfall, caught off a top edge for 17, 59-2.

Unsworth joined Needham and they passed the required total without losing a further wicket with 23 overs to spare, Needham closing on 37no and Unsworth 17no.

The 2nd X1 beat Newton in the Hawke Trophy scoring 210-8, Brad Holme 76 and Murray Hill undefeated on 50 being the main contributors, Newton were then bowled out for 120.

Next weekend the 1st Xl are away at Broadbottom on the Saturday and away to Brook Walton in the Village Cup.
