Event to honour local hero
PEOPLE are invited to get their hands dirty at an event being held to celebrate the Cockleshell Heroes.
It will take place on Friday (July 21) from 9am until 4pm at Stockport Market Hall and there will be an interactive clay modelling session as well as the chance to learn all about the marines who took part in Operation Frankton, the most daring commando raid of the Second World War.
Kenneth Brotherhood, who led the campaign for a memorial in honour of Cockleshell Hero James Conway, from Edgeley, will be giving talks about the bravery, sacrifice and importance of the mission.
Luke Perry, of Industrial Heritage Stronghold, who was chosen to design and create the memorial, will be running the clay modelling sessions.
Councillor Kate Butler, cabinet member for economy and regeneration, said: “Come on down to the Market Place and take a step back in time. This family friendly event is an experience for everyone to enjoy.”
The Cockleshell Heroes attacked German cargo ships in Bordeaux harbour in 1942.
James Conway was captured and subsequently executed aged just 20 years old.
