Diversions after sewer collapse

-

ONE of the busiest roads in central Stockport has been closed until further notice following a sewer collapse.

United Utilities confirmed the fault on Greek Street on Friday afternoon following investigations into the road surface crumbling away.

The area of road affected is adjacent to the Nelson pub and the road was immediately closed in both directions.

Diversions are in place and repair work is expected to begin on Friday afternoon.

It is uncertain at this stage how long it will take and when the road will reopen.

A spokesman for Stockport council said on Friday: “For safety and to complete repairs to the sewer Greek Street has been closed in both directions with immediate effect and traffic diverted onto adjacent routes.

“It is expected that United Utilities will begin repair works later today and continue over the weekend and into next week.

“A completion date for the work is yet to be advised.

“We will provide further updates as soon as more information is available from United Utilities.”
