Hall plans should ‘put traders first’

COUNCIL bosses are being urged to put independent traders at the heart of plans to regenerate Stockport’s historic old town quarter.

It comes as plans to turn the market’s Produce Hall into a ‘foodie’ destination gather momentum.

The organisers of popular monthly food and drink event Foodie Friday want to turn the Grade-II listed building opposite the indoor market hall into a ‘truly modern market space for the community,’ a plan which has gained the back- ing of the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB).

The plans would see independent traders leading the regeneration of the increasingly trendy old town quarter.

FSB South Branch chair Chris Manka said he believes the redevelopment should put independent traders at its core and avoid big name high street brands.

He said: “This regeneration should look to other successful examples such as in Altrincham, where independent traders have been the bedrock on which successful regeneration has been built and made the town there a destination of choice for foodies.

“High streets across the UK are struggling and the usual big name brands do not excite shoppers who now prefer diversity and choice.

“I would like to see Stockport council commit to similar plans for Stockport.”

Mr Manka also said the town’s musical heritage – both past and present – could be another tool to strengthen proposition.

He added: “The town centre here desperately needs an image makeover, so let’s explore the idea of making the area not just a great place to go for foodies, but for music lovers too.”

Council bosses have said the selection process for the lease on the Produce Hall and Blackshaw’s Cafe will begin shortly.

Coun Kate Butler said: “Shortly the council will launch a rigorous selection process, giving all interested Stockport’s operators the opportunity to submit detailed and comprehensive business cases and plans.

“These will be assessed on their offer and financial sustainability, as well as the enthusiasm and innovation they demonstrate. In order that we can ensure the success of the chosen tenant the winning bid will be chosen on the strength of the evidence presented within the submissions.”
