Ace double at Bramall Park

THERE were plenty of celebrator­y drinks at Bramall Park as two of their members posted notable holes-in-one.

The first came from 15-handicappe­r Scott Cowan on the 116-yard par three fourth hole in a mixed competitio­n.

His perfectly struck pitching wedge went straight into the hole for his first ace.

Then a few days later 13-handicappe­r Judy Read, who was playing in the Pooks Putter competitio­n achieved her fourth hole in one on the 155yard 12th with a driver.

Park member Jean Nield, who has double figures in aces in a long and distinguis­hed golfing career, one of the highest numbers in the country, is hoping that the ace double will inspire her to extend her record.

A singles Stableford at Cheadle had division one led in by the ever-reliable Bill Harris with 41 points from Brian Combe and Jeffrey Clapperton.

In division two it was much closer with a cpo on 37 points going in favour of Geoff Dicken from Stephen Brown followed by Stephen Wright 35 and David Va Ross 34.

Cheadle seniors played a medal qualifier and Ian Wightman topped division two with 64 from Bill Harris 66 and Ian Hornsby 67.

There was some hot scoring in division two led by Stephen Bevington after a cpo on 61 with Jan Elliott, two less than Derek Plant.

Cheadle ladies played a medal for the Lady Captain’s prize and it was won by the consistent Maire Eaton with 67 from Gail Crowley 69 and Sarah Huxley 70.

Disley’s men played a BB Stableford for the Millenium Trophy and top of the shop were P Zadoroshyn­i and Paul Holtom after winning a cpo on 45 points from Dave Stephenson and Tony Collinson.

It also needed a cpo on 36 points in the Disley Seniors Shield Stableford with Denis Underwood winning from Edward Gardener with Chris Hurst hot on their heels with 35.

Disley ladies played their fourth Shanghai medal qualifier for the Norris Cup and Irene Fell led in with 71 from Debbie Eyre 72 and Margaret Clarke 74.

Gatley’s men played for the Timperley Putter and Lee Wells led in with 38 points from Stuart Smith 37 and Keith Paterson, Peter Stiles and Chris Whitehead, all 36.

Gatley ladies played a medal for the Captain’s Prize and it was won by Margaret Rowland with 71 from Sonia McCann 73 and Rosin Andrew 74.

Heaton Moor’s men played over two rounds for the Chevalier Trophy and Lee Milner set the pace with an opening round of 65, three less than Alan Mottershea­d and Matthew Howarth.

In round two the enduring class of President Ken Lappin came to the fore as he led in with a stunning 64, five shots clear of Jon Beckett, Martin Thorley, Charlie Dinsdale, Denis Mulrenan, Peter Milner and Matthew Phillips.

In the Subsidiary Stableford Alan Rothwell was first past the post with 40 points from Colin Tichias 37 and Patrick HudsonDavi­es 36.

Moor’s ladies played a medal for the Rose Bowl and the proud winner with 72 was Monica McLoughlin, two less than Donna Greenhalgh and Yvonne Roberts. ●●Pete Burgess and Dave Finley (left) with the Houldswort­h Cup

Mellor and Townscliff­e ladies played a singles Stableford and it was won by Kate Smith with 33 points from Vivien Gent 31 and Patricia Phillips 30.

A Sunday Stableford for M and T’s men was won by S Pinchin with 38 points well clear of Ben Allcock 34 and Brian Bailey and James Carter, both 33.

A singles Stableford for New Mills men had division one led in by Alan Forbes with 41 points followed by Graham Ardern 39 and Robert Palmer 39.

In division two John Samme won a canter posting 41 points well clear of Philip Holland 35 and Michael Eddy 34.

New Mills ladies were in EWGA medal action with Rachael Unsworth top of the shop with 68 from Brenda Fink 69, Alison Rudder 72 and Jean Taylor 73.

Medal action for Romiley’s men had Alex Jones first past the post with 67, two clear of John Wallworth, Greg Giles and Jim Reid.

The Captain’s Prize to juniors at Romiley was led in by four-handicappe­r Harry Doyle with 74 from Alex Jones 76 and Brooke Snape 80.

Romiley’s ladies played a medal for the ‘major’ Challenge Bowl and it needed a cpo on 71 to see Sharon Dineen into top spot from Janet McRoberts with Heather Denton next in with 73.

The Balfour and Houldswort­h competitio­ns have been running in the Manchester area for well over 110 years and attract excellent entries for the competitio­ns they run throughout the golf season.

The Houldswort­h Cup is a Pairs Bogey competitio­n and it was hosted by Worsley Golf Club in excellent style.

Houldswort­h Golf Club has a great record in B and H competitio­ns and have had five previous winners in the competitio­ns.

The club were delighted when their dynamic duo of Pete Burgess (handicap 8) and Dave Finley (handicap 10) posted a great score of +6 to win a cpo from three other pairs to bring the Houldswort­h Cup back to their club.

Former Romiley and now Ringway Golf Club and Cheshire legend Ron Harrison showed his class in the Cheshire President’s Day competitio­n.

It was held at the pristine venue of Chester Golf Club, the home club of the County President Sean Ritchie, and in the singles Stableford Ron, who plays off two handicap posted 35 points to finish ahead of Gareth Bradley (Bramhall GC) 34 and Wilmslow’s Andrew Henshall 33.

Also in the mix with 32 points were Brian Humfress (Chester), John Clark (Chester), Steve Britton (Chester) and JP O’Neill (Royal Liverpool).
