Bissenden Cup final slot for the Green

- JOHN RICHARDS

ANOTHER win for the Green – a game all over in 23.1 overs, 1 hour and 35 minutes playing time, a hollow victory at best.

The Hawk Green skipper won the toss and invited the visitors, Hadfield, to take first knock. They opened with Jonny Tranter and Liam Doyle facing the usual opening attack of Ryan Stringer and Jason Downey and never got to grips with the Green attack, finishing 41 all out.

Stringer finished with 5-19 and Downey 5-18.

Josh Hampson and Paul Needham opened in the reply for the Green and with only a couple of scares passed the Hadfield total in the 11th over, Hampson closing on 21no and Needham 20 no.

The Greens 2nd Xl also had a comfortable victory at Newton. Batting first they reached 175ao with notable contributions from Justin Blackhurst, 52, Tom Littler, 39 and skipper Ben Littler 45. Unfortunately, from 166-4 they collapsed to 175ao.

However, their bowling and in particular the fielding, with a special mention to Tom Chetwyn, limited Newton to 90ao with three wickets apiece to George Ridings and Brad Holmes.

On Sunday Hawk Green 1st Xl travelled to Broadbottom for the semi-final of the Bissenden Cup.

Batting first, the Green openers Josh Hampson and Josh Unsworth appeared untroubled by the opening attack of Seb Croft and Ollie Cummings and took the score to 29 when Unsworth played across the line to be bowled by Cummings for 16. Peter Richards joined Hampson and the pair took the score to 95 when Hampson was caught by Joe Riley off the bowling of Chris Cheetham-Roberts for an excellent 41.

This was bring about a mini collapse for the Green as the same bowler removed Jack Needham, Paul Needham, Lee Hallas and Sam Clarke with the Green now on 140-6.

Next to fall was Richards for a fine 59, 147-7 and with the Green facing a mini crisis Jason Downey and youngster Ryan Stringer started to rebuild the innings and took the score to 193 when Downey was caught Cummings bowled Joe Riley for an excellent 28.

Next to the crease was Ben Cartledge who, in playing his first shot, dislocated his elbow and much to the horror of some of the fielders put it back in himself! He then continued to bat and added a further 24 runs to leave the Green on 219-8.

The Broadbottom reply was led by Aaron Walsh and Ryan Welsh and it was the in-form Walsh who was first to fall, caught and bowled Stringer in his first over.

Walsh was joined by Cheetham Roberts and the pair looked quite comfortable until Mark Richards removed Cheetham-Roberts with an excellent catch by Jack Needham, 42-2.

Welsh was caught and bowled by Richards, 57-3.

John Dodd was the next victim for Richards, caught Jack Needham, Jay Riley was caught at long on by Peter Richards, again off the bowling of Mark Richards whose fifth victim was Dom Perrin for 28, 147-7, stumped by Cartledge who in doing so dislocated his elbow for the second time and had to leave the field of play.

Jack Needham was introduced into the attack and quickly mopped up the tail and the innings closed on 148, pick of the Greens bowlers, Mark Richards 5-39 and Jack Needham 3-17.

The Greens 2nd Xl beat Tintwistle in the Hawk Final to complete a fine cup double, restricting their visitors to 161, George Ridings six wickets, and reaching the target with three wickets to spare.

The next games for the 1st Xl are away to New Mills in the league and on Sunday away to Sessay, Yorkshire, in the National Village Cup quarter final wickets pitched 1pm for both games.
