Short on glamour, but volutary work for
BEING on the Board of the Stockport County Supporters Cooperative, may not immediately strike you as the most glamorous position in life to aim for.
Indeed the job is the antithesis of glamour, entailing many hours of dedication dealing with routine matters on behalf of the membership.
Obviously it’s unpaid also, so just why does anyone sign up for the role?
I tasked myself with finding out on Saturday, seeking out those Board members crewing the Cheadle End Cabin ahead of County’s clash with Preston North End.
It turned out that Edward Keane was on duty.
Edward, a Housing Association manager at a firm based in Poynton, was co-opted to the Board this year, adding great energy and not a few ideas to the Events and Fund Raising Committee.
I found Edward in position dealing with questions from a couple of members as I arrived.
Footfall to and around the cabin was light, the game being the first home pre-season friendly, to which a crowd of around 1,000 would be deemed fairly good, so I would be able to get a word or two with Ed hopefully.
Asked why he gave his time so willingly to the Stockport County Supporters Cooperative, Ed opined that “County have been in a perilously dire place at times over the past decade or so, and I see the Supporters Coop as the vehicle for change. Thankfully matters at the Club are being turned around by the current Club Board, and in that respect the Supporters Cooperative’s measured and judiciously critical support for the Club Board, has been a vital part of this recovery.
