Plans for old pub run into another snag
ADEVELOPMENT that would finally transform an historic but derelict pub has once again suffered a setback.
The Bow Garrett has stood empty on Brinksway, Cheadle Heath, for around a decade and will continue that way after an admin error invalidated planning permission.
Permission had been given by the council to turn the pub, which has become an anti-social behaviour hotspot, into eight flats.
But this decision, made in February this year, had to be rescinded after the applicant Gravitas Properties was found to have filled a form in incorrectly.
This means the company has had to start the process again and has now resubmitted an application to Stockport Council.
Its last application took 10 months before it was ruled on and plans were also amended to reduce the number of flats from 13.
The Bow Garrett site has attracted vandalism and anti-social behaviour over a long period of time.
Parking concerns had also been raised and the previous plans prompted a letter of objection.
It said: “I am concerned about the parking spaces provided. The apartments will surely have more than one car per apartment. Where are the extra cars going to be parked?
“Garrett Walk is a quiet cul-de-sac where children play. The increased traffic will constitute a serious hazard. It is good that the Bow Garrett is at last to be redeveloped but I would be grateful if my comments could be considered.”
A letter of support was also sent in.
The proposals are to convert the existing building and add a three-storey extension.
The Bow Garrett, which is a locally listed building of architectural interest, was built in 1774 and originally called the Bulkley Arms.
It was renamed the Bow Garrett in 1893 and rebuilt five years later. Much of the pub’s structure will be retained by the scheme.
The new plans are currently out to consultation, which will finish on August 25.
