Park playday was a big hit

-

TWO charities worked together to reinstate the National Playday activity in Torkington Park.

The Lord Mayor of Stockport, Linda Holt, was on hand to officiate the event, which was organised by Action for Sick Children and The Together Trust.

She said: “What a wonderful event for the children - well organised and thoroughly enjoyable.”

The theme of the day was ‘free activities for children’ and it included a sand pit, straw play, cardboard city, face painting, biscuit decoration, a ‘make your own pizza’ class and sporting activities with Stockport County players.

There was also a magic show and a performance from Pixie Cheer to entertain the crowds, along with a book reading from Simon Adepetun, the author of The Bee Hive Book.

Val Jackson, chief executive of Action for Sick Children, said: “What a great opportunity this has been for us to bring the event back to Torkington Park.

“The ongoing message of the importance of play for children of all ages has truly been met today.

“However, it is only with the support of sponsors such as Adactus Housing, Travis Perkins, Tesco, Nestle Water and Morrisons that we have been able to hold the event this year, which is also to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Dental Playbox Project.

“Thanks should also go to the army of volunteers from the Together Trust, Manchester University Dental Hospital, Cheadle Hulme High School and the scores of individuals who gave up their time today. We could not have done this without them.

“We very much hope we can muster enough support to hold the event again next year.”
