Greens lift Hawke Cup at Hayfield

- JOHN RICHARDS

AFTER torrential rain on Saturday morning and with both sets of players working on the ground they managed to get the ground fit for a 3.30pm start and the overs reduced to 25 per team.

On winning the toss the Hawk Green skipper Josh Unsworth asked the hosts to bat first on what appeared to be a bowler friendly wicket.

Tintwistle opened their account with Karl Handforth and Richard Harris against the Greens opening attack of Ryan Stringer and Josh Unsworth.

It was the former who struck first when he had Handforth caught by Unsworth for 0, 5-1.

Richard Harris was joined by brother Martin and against some very good bowling they managed to take the score to 24 when Richard was run out by a direct hit from Sam Clarke for 13.

Peter Higginbottom and Martin Harris limped to 35 before Harris was LBW to Jordan Henderson for 11.

Higginbottom was next to fall without troubling the scorers, 52-5.

Ravi Patel who had played quite fluently up until he was bowled by Henderson for 28, 60-6, a few lusty blows from James Pool who finished not out 18 enabled Tintwistle to reach 84-7 when their allotted overs were completed.

Stringer, Unsworth (2) and Henderson (3) were the wicket takers for the Green.

In reply, the Green opened the run chase with Josh Hampson and Craig Young and the pair moved along to the required total seemingly untroubled with Young being the more aggressive of the two with some lusty maximums in his final score of 52no and with Hampson closing on 30no a well deserved 10 wicket victory for the Green.

The 2nd Xl also defeated Tintwistle 2nd Xl restricting the visitors to 107-8 from their allotted 36 overs, Tom Chetwyn, 5-52 and Bradley Holmes 3-23 and a mention for George Ridings who completed his 12 overs for just 21 runs.

The Green passed this total comfortably losing only one wicket that of skipper Ben Littler for 28 with Justin Blackhurst 62no and Tom Littler 14no.

On the Sunday the Greens 2nd Xl played Woodley in the Hawke Cup Final at Hayfield.

In glorious sunshine the Green skipper Ben Littler won the toss and elected to field.

Brad Holmes and George Ridings opened the bowling and soon had Woodley in trouble at, 27-4.

Jack Trowsdale and Martin Sands dug in and took the score to 75 in the 24th over when Sands was caught Ben Littler off the bowling of Peter Taylor for 14.

Paul Harris and Trowsdale added a further 27 much needed runs before Harris fell to Tom Chetwyn for 12.

With the score on 119 Trowsdale fell to a stunning catch by Tom Chetwyn off the bowling of Ben Littler for a hard earned 50 and the innings finally closed on 155-9 from the allotted overs.

George Ridings and Brad Holmes closed with three wickets each.

The Greens response was led by Ben Littler and Justin Blackhurst and just as their opponents in the first innings they struggled losing the first four wickets for 35,

Murray Hill (29) and Tom Chetwyn (35) turned the result in Greens favour and some hard hitting from Tommy Thornton gave Green victory with just an over to spare.

Tom Chetwyn was deservedly nominated Man of the Match for his all round contribution.

The 1st Xl are at home to Hayfield next Saturday and on the Sunday the replay of the Bissenden Cup at Mottram both 1pm starts.
