MORE roadworks misery is on the way for Stockport following the announcement of a six week-long one-way system in Cheadle.

From yesterday (August 29) Stanley Road will operate as one-way from the A34 roundabout to the Earl Road junction, 24 hours a day. There will be a diversion route.

The system will be put in place to accommodate improvement works to cope with increased traffic following the introduction of the A6 to Manchester Airport relief road.

MORE roadworks misery is on the way for Stockport following the announcement of a six week-long oneway system in Cheadle.

From yesterday (August 29) Stanley Road will operate as one-way (westbound) from the A34 roundabout to the Earl Road junction, 24 hours a day.

There will be a diversion route via Stanley Road, Wilmslow Road, the A555 and the A34 and a pedestrian route will be maintained through the one-way section of Stanley Road.

The system will be put in place to accommodate improvement works at the A34 junctions with Stanley Road and the A555, in order to cope with increased traffic following the introduction of the A6 to Manchester Airport relief road (A6MARR).

The improvements will include additional traffic lanes and lights on each arm of the junction to manage the flow of traffic and provide controlled crossing points. The proposals also include ‘enhanced facilities’ for pedestrians and cyclists, including cycle lanes.

Bosses on the A6MARR project say they have been working closely with Stockport Council and Cheshire East Council to ‘minimise the impact of the one-way operation of Stanley Road.’

However, residents have taken to social media to voice their concerns.

Posting on Twitter, Matthew Davis said: “Are you trying to make it as hard as possible for people to travel around that area? Whole thing has been a shambles.”

The borough has seen its fair share of roadworks this summer, including the complete closure of the A6 through the town centre between Exchange Street and Heaton Lane for bridge repair works to take place.

Work started on July 24 and the road is expected to remain closed for around another eight weeks.

Meanwhile, the ongoing improvement works on St Mary’s Way have been temporarily halted to allow more traffic to use the road while the A6 is closed.

At the end of last year drivers faced weeks of traffic pain after four of the main routes into the town centre underwent roadworks at the same time and commuters regularly complain of gridlock.
