Leaks cured after 125 years!
THE leaks have finally stopped at Cheadle and Gatley Conservative Club – after 125 years.
The club will celebrate its 125-year anniversary in September and 15 feet of cast iron piping of the same age has had to be removed.
Plumbers discovered that the pipe was almost completely blocked with the accumulation of more than a century of waste, causing flooding in one of the club’s toilets.
Club stewardess Andrea Dodd explained: “The piping must have been in place from the day the club opened.
“It was almost completely blocked and clearly had to be replaced.
“Now, thankfully, we can celebrate our anniversary with no chance of further flooding.”
The club, on the corner of Stockport Road and Oak Road in Cheadle, was opened on September 1, 1892.
It was built for £1,760, with the bowling green at the rear laid for just £75 – all the money raised by prospective members each buying a £1 share.
The club, which has more than 300 members, holds a variety of events including quiz nights, karaoke evenings and Soul Nights.
The celebrations will include a disco on September 1, with anniversary bowls competitions on the following two days.
Andrea said: “It promises to be a really memorable weekend.”
