Murray chips in at Bramhall

FORMER assistant profession­al Andrew Murray was delighted to be invited to open the new clubhouse refurbishm­ent and extension at Bramhall Golf Club.

After leaving Didsbury as a junior, Andrew worked as assistant profession­al to former Didsbury profession­al Brian Nield at Bramhall before joining the European Tour where he enjoyed success for several years.

Since then Andrew has enjoyed running his own golfing company and supporting local charities as well as golf media work.

Andrew cut the ribbon to officially open the Bramhall developmen­t and he was delighted to be accompanie­d by Brian and his wife and there is still a family connection as their daughter Judith is a member at Didsbury.

Andrew recalled his early days at Didsbury where Brian was his inspiratio­n and his family were very active in the club and other happy memories of his early days in golf where he used to cycle to Bramhall every day from Didsbury to work with Brian.

Following the opening ceremony Andrew than gave a chipping master class which was followed by an incredible trick shot display by Paul Barrington.

Medal action for Mellor and Townscliff­e’s men saw division one won with a superb round of 71-6-65 by Mark Hanson with his round including three birdies, 11 pars and only four bogeys.

Next in with 66 was Dan Clark, one less than Thomas Heginbotha­m and Phil Baker won division two with 64.

M and T ladies were in Stableford action with Carol Butler well clear with 39 points from Susan Hird 34 and Alison Davies 30.

The P Lightfoot Trophy at AVRO was won by George Mullin with 65, well clear of Peter Walker 67 and Derek Bell 68.

The latest round of the Seniors Shield at Disley was won by John Stuart with 37 points, five more than John Collier, Peter Fearn and Paul Sturgess.

It was closer in an Alternativ­e Stableford for Disley’s men with Chris Hurst posting 38 points, one more than Chris Holland and Tom Christie.

Irene fell was first past the post in the Disley President’s Prize to the ladies with a neat nett 70 taking her well clear of Bi Suk Knowles 75 and Elizabeth Critchlow and Anne Booth, both 79.

An EWGA medal for Cheadle’s ladies was won by Carole Harvey with 73, six less than Maire Eaton.

A singles Stableford for Cheadle’s men had division one won by Bill Venables with 39 points two ahead of Luke Yardley and Alistair Culpan.

In division two Joseph Matthews was out on his own with a huge 41 points, six more than Phil Collis.

A Stableford for Gatley’s men was led in by Matthew Milnes with 37 points ahead of Chris Whitehead 35 and Graeme Rawlinson and David Godfrey, both 34.

Pamela McKean won a ladies medal at Gatley with 77 taking her well clear of Margaret Rowland 84 and Angela Griffiths 85.

Heaton Moor ladies played a par competitio­n for the Jubilee Cup and Diane Wilson was the only one to beat par on +2 from the level par returns of Lynn Guy, Helen Leggatt and Julie Sherlock.

It was close in the medal for the Pearson Trophy for Moor’s men with David Rushton winning a cpo on 67 from Stephen Moore and hot on their heels with 68’s were John Wheeler and Mike Roberts.

New Mills men played over two rounds for the Club Trophy with the early pace being set by Chris Wood, 65, Sean Moore 66 and Dan Thomas Jack Marshall and Callum Clarke, all 67.

In round two Kallis Hyde led in with 66, one less than Will Hall and Keane Hyde but the overall winner with an aggregate of 134 was Kallis Hyde from Kean Hyde 135 and Chris Wood 136.

Warren Cup action for New Mills ladies had Helen Hodkinson on top with 34 points from Katherine Lindsay 33 and Celia James 28.
