Love Lane all ready for winter play

- BOWLS JAMIE BRAMLEY

WINTER bowling in Stockport is now firmly on the horizon with Love Lane running for a sixth year.

Since the closure of winter bowls at Stockport Cricket Club the venue has taken centre stage.

The events will begin with an open pairs competition at 10am on Sunday October 8th to begin the campaign.

All bowlers are welcome and the events need supporting after a relatively quiet winter last term.

The bowls calendar offers a wide variety of options including a county match against South Lakes every winter.

With a mixture of singles, pairs and county matches the sweeps are open to players of all abilities. Many junior bowlers have come through the ranks at Love Lane in a game starved of new players.

The Stockport and District League is heading towards a finish and relegation matters are not concluded. Nursery have fallen from grace over recent years and were crushed 3-13.5 by Victoria last week. That result leaves them with it all to do if they want to avoid relegation to the second tier.

Woodley Sports sit 23 points clear of Nursery though the Green Lane-based side do have one game in hand.

The title it seems is heading yet again to Reddish and Houldsworth Working Mens Club.

Rumours of players leaving next season though could mean Terry Gale has some major reshuffling of his pack to do this winter.

In the second division it’s looking like a Great Moor clean sweep as both teams hold promotion slots.

Victoria (2) and Spring Gardens still hold outside chances of getting promotion but need other results to go their way.

Elsewhere, Houldsworth Norris wrapped up the parks league which has become severely depleted.

The league which used to have five divisions has really dwindled in recent years. Finally the Workshops is seemingly heading to GMS who are in pole position as we head into the closing fixtures.
