POLICE have leafleted a block of flats that overlooks the scene where a woman was attacked and raped by a gang in the hope of finding witnesses.

The victim, a woman in her 20s, was ambushed by a group of three men near bushes on a patch of ground close to the junction of Cymbal Court and Penny Lane, in Stockport’s Lancashire Hill area.

The site is overlooked by dozens of flats in the Longsons, a large sevenstorey block.

Detectives are now turning to local residents for help in identifying the attackers.

The attack happened between 6.10am and 6.45am on Saturday September 9.

Officers have been conducting door to door inquiries, including delivering leaflets to residents’ in the flats.

A police spokesman said: “The incident happened in front of a big block of flats looking out onto that land so we have done a leaflet drop there.

“There are also extra high-visibility uniform patrols to provide extra reassurance.”

The location of the attack is less than half a mile from the town centre.

Police believe two of the men, who are all described as wearing dark clothing, raped the woman who has been badly traumatised by the assault.

Det Insp Cheryl Hughes, from Stockport police, said: “This was a terrifying attack on a woman in the early hours of the morning.

“No one should feel unsafe or be taken advantage of in this way and specialist officers are looking after the victim and ensuring she has the support she needs.

“This kind of crime is shocking and I am urging anyone who may have information or was around Penny Lane at this time to contact the police.

“I am also appealing for anyone who assisted the victim to contact the police as you may hold important information.”

Anyone with information should call police on 101, quoting incident number 460 of 09/09/17, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
