Gent Adam averts trip to Tameside

- FAN’S VIEW IAN DOOLEY

THANK you Adam Thomas.

Thank you for saving us all from a Monday evening in Ashton and thank you for delivering the only real highlight of Saturday’s match that put us into the next round of the Cup.

Adam has been largely a forgotten man but those supporters who get to EP early on a matchday will have watched Adam walk, jog, run, hop and jump up the Cheadle End steps with an oversized rubber band round his knees for months and months, while he’s obviously been frustrated by his injury he’s always had time for a quick chat or a photo opportunity with the kids, a more sociable, friendly man you’ll have trouble finding.

Adam is a true gent and he thoroughly deserved his man of the match award for his first start at EP in ages, he gave the Curzon defence no end of trouble and when the opportunity dropped to his feet, he took it and scored the only goal of the game.

The result gives us some prize money for, hopefully, Jim’s squad building and, again hopefully, some much needed confidence.

Last week’s debacle at York was followed by another at Telford, yes we scored but over the 90 minutes we were awful, half the defence were late arriving while half the midfield were still stuck on the motorway but even so we lost to two teams in York and Telford that had only one home win between them (Telford hadn’t even scored a home goal prior to our game!) and after the 6-0 win over Southport it makes those defeats even more confusing.

The FA Cup gave us some relief from the league and while Curzon Ashton might not have been the glamour tie, it looked winnable and so it proved, albeit by the 1 goal.

Our near neighbours brought hardly any supporters but did bring some “competitive/ combative” tactics.

The number of late challenges had already stacked up before the referee issued a yellow. Even then there was a fair number of cynical tackles that on another day could have resulted in a red or two, just look at Matty Warburton’s right thigh if you want proof!

Believe it or not, we’ve already completed a quarter of the season and Saturday sees the League’s whipping boys, North Ferriby, arrive at EP and while it can’t be called a six pointer, it will be seen as a must win game by the faithful.
