Prof wins society’s top award
LEADING UK sight loss charity the Macular Society has named an ophthalmologist who lives in Heaton Moor as the winner of its top award.
Professor Paul Bishop has been chosen as the recipient of this year’s Alan Alderman Award, the highest accolade at the charity’s annual Awards for Excellence.
The award, named after the Macular Society’s popular former chairman, recognises exceptional service to people with macular conditions and the charity over a significant period of time.
Professor Bishop has had a career spanning more than 30 years and now works at the University of Manchester, where he is professor of ophthalmology and matrix biology, and Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, where he is an honorary consultant ophthalmologist.
Professor Bishop said: “I’m delighted to receive this award.
“Research can be repetitive at times and not every project will be as successful as you hope, but when you do make a genuine discovery which could make a difference to someone who has been affected by sight loss, that is incredibly exciting.”
