Car thieves used cleaning items to cover their tracks
BURGLARS who broke into a family’s home while they slept upstairs stole the keys to a £40,000 sports car - before taking cleaning products to cover their tracks.
Thugs smashed through the back door of Damian Gregory’s home in Cheadle Hulme, Stockport, in the early hours of Wednesday.
They used a glove to cover the sensor on a security light before breaking in.
The robbers even went through the children’s backpacks.
Damian said he was woken at around 5.30am by a neighbour who also had his sports car stolen. He noticed cleaning spray from his house was left at his neighbour’s - and that his blow torch was left in his back garden.
It is thought the thieves used the spray and the blow torch to get rid of evidence.
Speaking about the theft of his black BMW 335, Damian said: “They were obviously professionals, they knew what they were doing.
“They had put a glove over the sensor of the light and then taken cleaning products and a blow torch, which police say is used to remove any DNA from the house.”
Damian, who owns a travel company and a children’s nursery, added: “They ransacked the place. They have been in biscuit tins, cupboards, even the children’s school bags.
“My eldest daughter, who is 12, is really upset about it. A car is a car, but it’s more the fact they have been in the house.
“I want to make people aware this is happening in the area. There is a lot of this going on here recently so people should make sure everything is secure.”
Damian said he is getting more security at the house to prevent it happening again.
A GMP spokesman said: “Officers received a call at 5.35am to reports of a white Mercedes car being stolen.
“We received another call at 5.49am to reports of a black BMW also being stolen.”
