Gloag in for singles triumph

- BOWLS JAMIE BRAMLEY

LOVE Lane was once again packed out with 26 bowlers taking part in winter’s opening singles. The field contained several of the top players in the area and a good day’s play was in store.

Jack Hargreaves from Hyde started well putting out Shaun Miller in a decent second round match up 21-16.

Rochdale character Jordan Duckworth was gaining confidence and found himself in the quarter finals.

Heavyweights Ben Gloag, Ian Stokes and Jamie Bramley also progressed through the field.

Following on from last week’s great game, Darren Sargeant had another monster match winning 21-20 against Martin Lingard.

The only lady in the event Heather Bramley had a great first round win before falling to Stokes.

The quarter finals began with Ben Gloag edging out Rochdale’s Phil Biram by five shots 21-16. Jack Hargreaves won to the halfway mark 21-12 against Darren Sargeant.

The lively Duckworth then eventually fell to Bramley not scoring again from 14 across. Cracking semi finals lay in prospect and Hargeaves edged out Bramley 21-18 in a titanic battle. Matters were slightly easier for the now on fire Gloag as he burnt off Stokes 21-10.

The final probably had Hargreaves as slight favourite on previous form. Gloag though had other ideas sticking them close on a very short mark to romp home 21-8. The flyer was won by Adam Rushton who defeated Martin Lingard 21-13.

Its been a great start to winter at Love Lane with big fields every week. Next Sunday it’s pairs and it’s already nearly full.
